2012 TRIP SCHEDULE

Note: All trips leave on time!  Please contact the coordinator ahead of time to let her/him know you are coming.  All trips will carpool from the named meeting place unless other arrangements are made.

Note too: This schedule is subject to change. Trips may be added or deleted. Trip destinations may change depending upon what species are being reported. Finally, pick up (last-minute trips are always possible. Watch for email announcements about unscheduled outings.


January 14 (Saturday).  Year-bird Roundup. Carpool to winter birding hotspots in Southern Maine to jump start your year list.  Coordinator: TBA.  Meeting place:  Hannaford's parking lot, Gardiner.  Departure time: 5AM.

February 26 (Sunday).
 
Bangor/Orono/UMO Campus OR Route 16 and Rangeley. Depending on what is being seen, this trip will look either for winter finches, grosbeaks, waxwings up north, and then raptors and other birds along the Kennebec on the way back or for boreal specialties, crossbills, etc. along Route 16 and side roads. Coordinator, to be determined. Meeting place in either case: Back parking lot, City Hall, Augusta. Departure time: 6AM

March 10 (Saturday).
Plum Island.
Target birds include wintering waterfowl, hawks and owls. Includes Salisbury Beach and the New Hampshire coast as time allows.  Coordinator: To be determined. Meeting place: Hannaford parking lot, Gardiner. Departure time: 5:30AM.

April 14 (Saturday).  Abagadassett River mouth or other locations. Target birds include migrating waterfowl and early-arriving passerines.  Final destinations will be determined by what is being seen at the timeCoordinator: To be determined.  Meeting place: Hannaford's parking lot, Gardiner.  Estimated departure time: 7AM. Departure time may change depending on destination(s) chosen and the tides.

May 1 -25 (Monday - Friday each week). Morning walks at Kennebec area spring migration sites.  Target birds: Warblers and other returning songbirds, wading birds, marsh birds, etc. Early migration and the start of spring warblers.  Most walks will take place at Viles Arboretum but other locations will also be included in the final schedule. Watch for updates here.  No need for pre-contact, just show up by 7 each morning. Coordinators to be determined.

May 12 (Saturday).   International Migratory Bird Day.  Celebrate Birds all day long as the Viles Arboretum and the Augusta Bird Club observe the 20th anniversary of this stellar event. Enjoy bird walks, kid's activities, food, bird banding demonstrations and more. Hosted by the Augusta Bird Club and the Viles Arboretum.  See the Arboretum web site for complete details.

May 26 (Saturday). Monhegan Island. Target birds: Common migrating species and strays. Details await boat schedules. Stay tuned for more.

June 2 (Saturday). Rangeley/Oquossoc/Route 16. Target birds: Boreal breeders such as Spruce Grouse, Boreal Chickadee, Gray Jay, Blackburnian Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Black-backed Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, and Swainson's Thrush. Coordinator: Lionel Quirion. Meeting Place:  Augusta City Hall. Departure time: 5:30AM.

June 16 (Saturday). New Event! Informal Breeding Bird Survey of locations in the Greater Augusta area. Form your own team and record breed birds in a territory of your choosing. Details to follow.


July 28 (Saturday). Ferry Beach, Pine Point, Eastern Road, all in Scarborough. Target birds: Shorebirds galore!  Godwits, whimbrels, peeps, and more, plus gulls and night herons!  Coordinator: To be determined. Meeting Place:  Hannaford parking lot, Gardiner. Departure time: 6:30 a.m. sharp.

August 18 (Saturday). Scarborough Marsh.  Target birds: Shorebirds. Depart the Hannaford lot, Gardiner, at 7AM. Coordinator: To be determined.

September 8-22 (Saturdays).  Cousins Island.  Target birds: Fall migrants. Coordinator: To be determined.  Meeting Place:  Gardiner Hannaford.  Departure time: 6AM. Note: The success of any Cousin's Island trip in the fall depends to some degree on wind direction overnight. Please watch here for updates.

September 29 (Saturday).
Monhegan Island. Target birds: Fall migrants. One day tour from Port Clyde at 7AM returning to Port Clyde around 5PM.
Coordinator: to be detgermined. Note: This trip will require advance registration as space on the Port Clyde ferry will have to be confirmed.  Watch for updates.

October 20 (Saturday). Green Point Farm WMA, Dresden. Target birds: Fall sparrows, Rusty Blackbirds, late-migrating Warblers. Coordinator: To be determined. Meeting Place: Green Point Farm, Route 128, Dresden, 7:30AM

November 3 (Saturday). Sabattus Pond. Target birds, migrating ducks and other waterfowl. Coordinator: To be determined. Meeting place. Hannaford's parking lot in Gardiner. Departure time: 7AM.

December 15 (Saturday).
  Augusta Christmas Bird Count.  Our annual count. Contact Jay Adams to participate.

December 16 (Sunday).  Waterville Christmas Bird Count.  Annual count just to the north a bit. Contact Bets Brown to participate.
